Process for the treatment of liquid ferrous metals using a cored wire containing calcium

The process consists in producing a liquid metal into which is introduced a cored wire the core of which contains a material composed predominantly of a calcium-based alloy. This alloy contains at least 75 mass % of Ca and at least 5 mass % of Ni. Preferred composition: at least 80 % of Ca and up to 20 % of Ni. Tests performed by means of the device shown in Figure 1 have shown that it is possible to perform the introduction of the cored wire 10 into liquid steel 2 at a rate of 80 to 120 g of Ca per ton of liquid steel and per minute without causing an excessive boiling.
