The present invention relates to the shell of buildings and earthworks and its subject is a method for digging an excavation below the ground level of existing buildings. The following method is mainly characterised in that it consists in assembling above the ground of an existing building 2 and inside the latter, support elements 3, 3', 4, 4'', 5, 5'', forming a rectangular parallelepipedal structural 1, in fixing digging means 6 onto one of the elements of the said structure, then in digging and removing the excavated material from the building, such that the assembled elements sink under the combined effect of their weight and that of the digging means, then in superimposing and in assembling, above the abovementioned elements, other support elements and in continuing the operations of digging, of clearing, of superimposing and of assembling stage by stage, until the desired excavation depth is obtained. Applications to the construction of cellars, fallout shelters and other buried hollow spaces under the ground of existing buildings. <IMAGE>
