PURPOSE:To extract the correct vector information by unifying and processing including the second direction of the four direction histogram characteristics, when the segment is described by unifying and processing four direction projection characteristics extracted by a rectangular area cut with a lattice as a center and four direction histogram characteristics extracted at a rectangular area surrounded by the lattice. CONSTITUTION:In four direction histogram characteristics extracted at the area surrounded by the lattice, when the difference between the first and second direction components is the value or below set beforehand, the second direction component is also extracted as shown in Fig. (b) 1 and 2. In a unifying processing step to unify the projection characteristics and direction characteristics and convert to the segment of eight directions passing through the lattice, the eight direction components with possibility are extracted by unifying processing, taking the second direction into consideration as shown in (c) of Fig. (c). In the pursuing processing, the cut segment is made invalid and the correct vector information is extracted.
