The device is intended in particular for serial matrix printers which have a print head (2) located opposite a platen (1) with selectively actuatable printing elements (3), the recording medium (5) resting on the platen (1) and an ink ribbon (6) which can be moved forwards continuously or stepwise being guided between the printing elements (3) and the recording medium (5). In order to provide improved guiding of the ink ribbon (6), which prevents unintentional transfer of ink onto the recording medium (5) or onto another object, it is proposed that an ink-ribbon guide (12) be arranged between the print head (2) and the platen (1) and that an ink-ribbon mask (7) be arranged between the ink-ribbon guide (12) and the platen (1), which ink-ribbon mask rests on the ink-ribbon guide (12) and which is provided with a shaped aperture (13) in the region of the printing elements (3). <IMAGE>
