To prevent yarn bridges or yarn residues on the rear side of the basic cloth, to be patterned with tufts, of a tufting fabric, there is provided for a tufting machine the needles of which are controlled individually, an apparatus which, for each yarn strand, comprises a clamping device which is so synchronised with the drive of the needles that, when the associated needle is at a standstill, the yarn strand taken up by it is retained relatively immovably until a new needle actuation.
