It has been found that indan-2-yl ethers of the general formula <IMAGE> in which R1 represents a saturated or unsaturated, straight-chain, branched or cyclic alkyl radical which has 1-12 carbon atoms and which can be substituted by cycloalkyl, alkoxy, aryl or aryloxy groups, it being possible for the aryl radical to be optionally substituted by alkoxy and/or alkyl groups, R2 represents hydrogen, a straight-chain or branched alkyl radical having 1-4 carbon atoms or an alkoxy radical having 1-4 carbon atoms, R3 represents hydrogen, a straight-chain or branched alkyl radical having 1-4 carbon atoms or an alkoxy radical having 1-4 carbon atoms, R4 represents hydrogen, a straight-chain or branched alkyl radical having 1-4 carbon atoms or an alkoxy radical having 1-4 carbon atoms, are valuable perfumes having a fruity, floral, herbaceous, spicy, woody note and excellent persistence properties.
