The oxidative degradation of resistant organic compounds by environmentally acceptable oxidising agents such as hydrogen peroxide is not possible or possible only with difficulty as is their destruction by UV irradiation. According to the claims of the invention, oxidative degradation succeeds in many cases by simultaneous action of hydrogen peroxide and UV radiation. This method can be used, for example, for the destruction of complexing agents in waste waters containing heavy metal complexes. After destruction of the complexing agents, the heavy metals can be simply removed as hydroxides.
