An automatic monitoring appliance (20) for discharging urine has means for the electronic non-contact measurement of the actual specific weight and the temperature of a urine sample in a closed fluid system, said measured values being used to determine a temperature-compensated value for the specific weight and to display it. The necessary calculation is performed by a microcomputer. The actual value of the specific weight is measured by ultrasonic transducers, ultrasonic waves being transmitted through the urine sample in a measuring chamber of a measuring chamber arrangement (24). Based on the weight of a collection vessel (22) mounted on a housing (36) the computer further determines the volume of the discharged urine and likewise displays this value. <IMAGE>
