In a method for the air-shielding of open baths, in particular chemical or electrochemical baths, in which air is blown in from one edge of the bath over the surface of the bath and is extracted on the opposite side of the bath together with room air which is sucked up by the air flow passing over the surface of the bath, the air to be blown in is removed from the volume of air extracted. In this way, on the one hand the quantity of waste air to be conducted off to the atmosphere can be considerably reduced and, on the other hand, the heat loss resulting via the surface of the bath can likewise be greatly reduced, specifically in each case compared to known methods in which only fresh air is blown onto the surface of the bath without recirculation of extracted air.
