The invention relates to a method for rendering inert the surface of a material web 12 conveyed through a treatment station 63, in which the material web 12 is conducted via an inlet slot 64 into a closed chamber, in which, in front of and possibly behind the treatment station 63, inert gas is blown over the width of the material web 12 against a limited region of the surface and a mixture of air and inert gas situated in the chamber is drawn off. The boundary gas layer, which bears against the material web 12 on the housing inlet side and is drawn in from outside, is deflected transversely to the direction of movement of the material web and drawn off with the mixture of air and inert gas situated in the chamber. Provided to this end on the housing inlet side is a device 2, 3 for deflecting the boundary gas layer. A device 4 serves for building up an initial gas cushion in the direction of movement of the material web 12 before the stage of rendering inert 6.
