A mechanism wheel for a chain mechanism consists of a sun wheel (7), mounted at the periphery of which, by way of one-way clutches (23) are chain wheels (24) on guide elements which are mounted in a manner which allows them to be displaced relative to the sun wheel (7) between two radial limiting positions. The guide elements are at the same time supported on the circumference of an oval guiding body (10) which is displaceable in a straight line along a diametral line of the sun wheel (7) and is acted upon in this direction by a spring element (17). The radial position of the guide elements relative to the sun wheel (7) is determined by an equilibrium between the forces to be transmitted by the chain (6), on the one hand, and the opposing force of the spring element (17), on the other hand. In this way, an equilibrium of forces, a particular radial position of the guide elements and hence a particular effective radius of the mechanism wheel corresponding to the tensile force to be transmitted by the chain (6) is obtained. The transmission ratio is thus adjusted automatically in accordance with the particular tensile force in the chain (6). <IMAGE>
