To produce a multi-layer fibre mat (12), a primary fleece (5) is superposed in a zigzag-shaped manner on a depository web (10). The superposition takes place by means of a pendulum band which deposits the oncoming primary fleece (5) on the depository web (10) in a zigzag-shaped manner in the form of loops (11). The speed of the oncoming primary fleece (5) and the transport speed of the depository web (10) must be regulated in such a way that the number of layers deposited one on top of the other is even over the entire width of the fibre mat (12) on the depository web (10) and the ratio of the speed of the primary fleece and the speed of the depository web is equal to the product of the ratio of the width of the primary fleece to the width of the fibre mat and the number of layers deposited one on top of the other. If these conditions are satisfied, the homogeneity of the fibre mat (12) on the depository web (10) and therefore its heat-insulating properties can be substantially improved. Fluctuations in weight per unit area can be largely avoided. <IMAGE>
