PURPOSE:To provide a thermal transfer medium capable of transferring images with high quality without any effects of the surface of a transfer paper, by providing a layer comprising a chemical foaming agent between a base film and a heat-fusible ink layer. CONSTITUTION:The thermal transfer medium comprises the base film 4, a foamable layer 2 and the heat-fusible ink layer 1, and when a thermal head is driven according to a recording signal to partially generate heat, a foaming agent 3 is thermally decomposed, resulting in foaming. When 2, 2'- azobisisobutyronitrile is used as the foaming agent 3, it is decomposed at a temperature of 90-104 deg.C to liberate gaseous nitrogen. In addition, the ink layer 1 is melted or softened by the heat generated by the thermal head. By foaming of the foaming agent 3, the ink is separated from the base film 4, and is directly transferred onto the transfer paper. Accordingly, even where the surface of the transfer paper is rugged, the ink is transferred uniformly onto the paper, and favorable image quality can be obtained. |
