<p>A method of bonding a metal to a saturated rubber comprises incorporating an N-substituted maleamic acid, or an N-substituted maleimide having at least one carboxyl or hydroxyl group on the substituent into the rubber, and curing the rubber by a free radical curing reaction, said curing being effected whilst the rubber is in contact with the metal. Specified rubbers are ethylene-propylene copolymers, ethylene-propylene-non-conjugated diene terpolymers, butadiene-styrene copolymers, butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers, butadiene-vinyl pyridine copolymers, gum natural rubber and polyurethane rubber. The free radicals may be formed from organic peroxides and hydroperoxides, from 2:2-azo-bis-(2-methyl - propionitrile) or 1:3 - diphenyl-triazone or by subjecting the mixture to ionizing radiation. The rubber may also contain conventional compounding ingredients.
