PURPOSE:To prevent meaningless stroke extraction to recognize characters accurately by discriminating whether each stroke is included in another stroke or not and deleting the stroke if it is included in another stroke. CONSTITUTION:The geographical pattern of an unknown character is stored in a picture element memory 11 and is labeled by a boundary labeling circuit 12. A substroke extracting circuit 13 traces the continuity in four directions of a labeled black picture element to obtain substroke data, and this data is stored in a RAM15. Inclusion relations, namely, burying relations between strokes are discriminated and buried strokes are erased on a basis of stroke data stored in the RAM15 and stroke end point data.
