The invention relates to compounds of the formula III < IMG > III wherein R2 is -C(CH3)3 or -O-C(CH3)3. Also provided is a process for the preparation of these compounds. Compounds of the formula III are useful in the preparation of 4-phenyl-1,3-benzodiazepins, which exhibit activity as antidepressants, analgetics and anti-convulsants.
