PURPOSE:To measure the outer diameter of an end mill accurately by successively sampling the point positions of cutting edges of the end mill rotated at a constant speed by a contactless type optical outer diameter measuring device and calculating a sine curve on the basis of least square method. CONSTITUTION:The end mill 1 having two cutting edges of which outer diameter is to be measured is rotated at a fixed turning speed and the contactless type optical outer diameter measuring instrument is arranged in the direction shown by the arrow (p) which is vertical from the side of the end mill 1 to its axis. The outer diameter of the end mill 1, i.e. the width size of the positive projection of the end mill 1 observed from the measuring instrument 2 side, is successively sampled and only the measured values included within the range of a sine curve are inputted to a computer. The computer executes the least square method operation to be performed in the prescribed procedure from the inputted measured values in accordance with a previously set program. Consequently, the equation of a sine curve corresponding to the measured values and using time as an independent variable is calculated and the amplitude of the sine curve is found out as the outer diameter of the end mill 1. |
