PURPOSE:To produce the titled substance useful as an infrared-absorbent, in high yield at a low cost, by reducing a 2-phenylbenzotriazole-N-oxide with an aldehyde in the presence of an alkali, a naphthoquinone compound and a phase-transfer catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula II can be produced by reducing the compound of formula I (R1 is H, Cl, 1-4C lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, carbonyl, etc.; R2 is H, Cl, 1-4C lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, etc.; R3, R4 and R5 are H, Cl, 1-12C alkyl, phenyl, etc.) with an aldehyde in the presence of an alkali such as sodium hydroxide, a naphthoquinone compound, and a phase-transfer catalyst. The molar ratio of the raw material compound of formula I to the aldehyde is preferably 1 to 1-4. The starting compound of formula I can be synthesized by reducing an o-nitrobenzene of formula III with an aldehyde in the presence of an alkali, a naphthoquinone compound and a phase- transfer catalyst.
