PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance useful as a raw material of ultraviolet absorber, in high yield and purity, without using reduced pressure distillation or vacuum distillation, etc., by reacting an alkenylaromatic hydrocarbon with a phenolic compound at a specific charged ratio. CONSTITUTION:The objective compounds can be produced by using an alkenylaromatic hydrocarbon (e.g. alpha-methylstyrene) and a phenolic compound as raw materials, and reacting the compounds with each other at a charged molar ratio of 0.5-3.0, preferably <=1.6, preferably in the presence of an aluminum phenolate catalyst. The amount of the aluminum phenolate is usually 0.1-10.0wt%, preferably 0.5-5wt% in terms of metallic aluminum, based on charged phenolic compound. The reaction temperature is preferably 100-160 deg.C when alpha-methylstyrene is used as a raw material. |
