PURPOSE:To improve a reading precision without raising the precision of a sending pitch when a secondary scanning is performed by moving a read optical system for both the primary and secondary scanning of an original and taking out an element only responded for a prescribed interval. CONSTITUTION:Marks 12-1 through 12-3 are put on an original tray 2 toward the direction of the secondary scanning by every prescribed interval L and the read optical system constitutes a system so that the image of a line part longer than the interval L is formed on a light receiving element 10. Before the primary scanning, positions of the marks 12-1 through 12-3 are moved to positions where the image is formed on the light receiving element 10. The light receiving element 10 specifies one light receiving element 10 corresponding to a mark at this position and the output of the only part corresponding to the interval L of the light receiving element is taken out.
