PURPOSE:To reduce phase jump before and after the noise band produced with track traversing of the rotary magnetic head during high speed reproduction of a magnetic tape devoid of H-arraying by setting the delay time of a delay circuit forming signal filing the drop out portion of the signal during dropout compensation so as to be slightly larger or smaller than one horizontal scanning period. CONSTITUTION:Dropout compensation is effected by substituting the dropout portion in the video signal read from the magnetic tape by the rotary magnetic heads 5a, 5b by the signal delayed by the delay circuit 3. The delay time of the delay circuit 3 forming the signal filling the dropout portion of the signal during dropout compensation in a video tape recorder 1 is set so as to be larger or smaller by DELTAH than one horizontal scanning period such that the phase jump before and after the noise band produced with signal dropout with track traversing of the heads 5a, 5b during high speed reproduction of the magnetic tape devoid of H-arraying is reduce by a time interval NDELTAH which is equal to the number N of the horizontal scanning lines within the noise band multiplied by the predetermined time DELTAH.
