PURPOSE:To obtain higher alcohol under mild reaction conditions by bringing monoester of long-chain dicarboxylic acid and long-chain carboxylic acid into electrolytic condensation in an alcohol soln. and reducing the resultant higher fatty ester. CONSTITUTION:The long-chain monoester of long-chain dicarboxylic acid expressed by general formula I (R is an alkyl group, x is 4-26) and the long- chain carboxylic acid expressed by general formula II (y is 6-22) are brought into the cross Kolbe electrolytic condensation in the alcohol soln. The higher fatty ester which is obtd. by such reaction and is expressed by general formula III (total of x and y is any among 24, 26, 30, 32, 34) is reduced, by which the higher alcohol expressed by formula IV is obtd. Long-chain dicarboxylic acid is otherwise used as a starting material and after the long-chain monoester of long-chain dicarboxylic acid is obtd. by esterifying the same, the higher alcohol is obtd. by the method similar to the above-mentioned method.
