PURPOSE:To accomplish mass production of magnetic heads in optimum condition by sensing the groove position in the longitudinal direction of a long stretching member exposed between a chuck and a shorter member of a work for magnetic head held by the chuck, sensing the position of the work, and by sensing the work mounting position accurately. CONSTITUTION:A fiber sensor 7 is located under the front of a lower chuck 6, and a work 4 for magnetic head is pushed out forward by a sliding member to be located where the front corner part of a groove 42a protrudes ahead from the front end-face of the lower chuck 6 so that said front corner becomes sensible with a sensor 7. Accordingly works 4... placed in parallel in the intermediate position are also sensible individually with the sensor 7 to ensure accurate location at all times, so that magnetic heads can be mass-produced with good accuracy.
