PURPOSE:To prevent the corrosion of apparatus used in an electrolytic cell by measuring the concn. of hydrochloric acid in return salt water and adding chlorine on the basis of the concn. so as to satisfy a specified value. CONSTITUTION:When alkali chloride is electrolyzed by a diaphragm method, the concn. of hydrochloric acid in return salt water is measured, and on the basis of the concn. expressed by X normal, chlorine is added by an amount between the value K represented by an equation K=AX<2>+BX+C and <=50 times of value K. In the equation, A=5.55X10<-3>T<2>+17.5, B=1.39X10<-4>T<2>+0.23T+29.5, and C=1.85X10<-3>T<2>+0.06T-12.8. By such a treatment, the return sat water is made harmless to any part of the electrolytic process, and the corrosion of a titanium material can be perfectly prevented in the treating stage.
