A nuclear reactor has a control rod with a hydraulic drive consisting of a piston (17) in a cylinder (16), through which the hydraulic liquid (32,20) continuously flows (arrow 35). Behind the piston a hydraulic liquid inlet (31) constitutes a bypass flow in addition to the main flow (20) of hydraulic liquid, while further back the cylinder (16) has a constriction (33). The cylinder (16) is pref. mounted inside the reactor pressure vessel and the hydraulic liquid is primary coolant from a bypass. In particular the cylinder maybe arranged in parallel to the main coolant circulating pump.
