PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance useful as an intermediate for herbicide, easily without using particular apparatus, by reacting an optically active alpha- halopropionic acid alkali metal salt with hydroquinone, etc. in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide and water, and separating the objective product taking advantage of solubility difference in water. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound is produced by reacting the optically active compound of formula (X is Cl or Br; M is H or alkali metal atom) with hydroquinone or alkali metal salt of hydroquinone in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide (preferably sodium hydroxide) and water at 20-80 deg.C, preferably 20-50 deg.C, and precipitating optically active 2-(4-hydroxyphenoxy) propionic acid disodium salt. The amount of water is 1-2.5pts.wt. per 1pt. of hydroquinone, and that of the base is 1.5-10mol, preferably 1.5-4mol per 1mol of hydroquinone.
