Optical device for detection and protection of moving objects, especially for measuring the distance separating two moving objects moving one behind the other and the relative speed of the two moving objects. Each moving object A comprises, at the front, an optical means 2 for emitting and receiving a light beam moving in a horizontal plane through a defined angle, in such a way that the said beam, by encountering a coded reflecting strip 1 arranged on the rear of each moving object B, is reflected to the receiver of the following moving object A, the reflected light beam being converted into an electrical signal which is processed by an electronic circuit. The invention is used to measure the distance separating two moving objects. <IMAGE>
