PURPOSE:To improve the operating efficiency of welding by detecting the difference of the arc voltages between an electrode and an upper work and lower work in the stage of main welding and determining welding conditions in accordance with such voltage difference. CONSTITUTION:A welding power source 4 passes the prescribed main welding current between the work 1 and the electrode 2 upon receipt of the command from a controller 5. The potential difference of the voltages V1 and V2 between the upper work 1 and the lower work 1 and the electrode 2 is calculated successively by a CPU7 via an A-D converter 6. The welding conditions corresponding to such potential difference are drawn out of a memory 8 and are applied via an interface 9, sequence 10 and controller 11 to the welding power source 4. The power source 4 passes the crater current corresponding to the gap between the works 1 and 1 after a pause time according to the above-mentioned method. The optimum welding is thus made possible even if the gap between the works 1 and 1 changes and therefore the working efficiency is improved.
