PRODUCTION OF 2-(4'-AMYLBENZOYL)BENZOIC ACID MIXTURE

PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound useful as an intermediate raw material of organic chemicals, etc., in high yield and efficiency, by reacting tertiary amylbenzene with phthalic anhydride in the presence of a catalyst comprising a complex of anhydrous aluminum chloride and a nitro compound. CONSTITUTION:2-(4'-Amylbenzoyl)benzoic acid mixture rich in 2-(4'-tert- amylbenzyol)benzoic acid is produced by reacting tert-amylbenzene with phthalic anhydride in the presence of an aluminum chloride-nitro compound complex consisting of anhydrous aluminum chloride and a nitro compound. The complex can be produced by mixing 1mol of anhydrous aluminum chloride and 1-1.2mol of a nitro compound usually in a halogen-containing solvent. The objective mixture rich in a compound useful as a raw material of high-purity 2-tert- amylanthraquinone useful for the production of hydrogen peroxide can be produced by this process.
