The alternator output is maintained at a high level during low engine speeds, typically during urban driving, by having two drive couplings from the engine, one multiplying the shaft rotation speed. Change in coupling is automatic and a function of shaft rotation. Normal coupling is via a belt (4) multiplication being via epicyclic gearing (9,10,11) and the belt. Change in coupling method is by centrifugal force, forcing out ball bearings (16) set in a triangular slot (14) moving the mechanism along the alternator shaft (6) and working against springs (15) acting to keep it in the original coupling mode. Three such balls can be used spaced at 120 degrees, the spring pressure being such as to cause coupling changeover at, typically, 2000 rpm. |
