PURPOSE:To detect the coordinates of a point specified by an input pen at a high speed in terms of a coordinate detecting system even if the response speed of a display or the input pen is slow by dividing a screen and narrowing the divided screen. CONSTITUTION:The position specified by the input pen 12 is bisected into parts A and A' on the display screen of a CRT8, and the part A is subjected to the white and black inversion by a white and black inversion control means 9. Since the output of the input pen 12 is not changed, the position indicated by the input pen 12 is discriminated to be within the part A'. The part A is returned to its original, and the part A' is bisected into parts B and B', the former is subjected to the white and black inversion. Since the output of the input pen 12 is changed at this time, the position indicated by the input pen 12 is decided to lie within the part B. Then the part B is returned to its original, and the part B is bisected into parts C and C'. Such an operation is repeated to narrow a screen area, whereby target coordinates can be detected.
