PURPOSE:To increase surface hardness and to prevent initial wear from occuring when used for excavating tools or the like by subjecting the surface of high manganese cast steel parts in which C content and Si content are limited to specific values to explosive hardening. CONSTITUTION:The material for excavating tools or the like is produced by use of the high manganese cast steel having a composition containing 0.90-1.35wt% C, <1.00wt% Si, and >13.00wt% Mn. Succeedingly, laminar explosives are placed on the surface of the cast steel to carry out explosive hardening once or twice, so that the surface is hardened at its depth of >=7mm to a Brinell hardness HB>250. In this way, the initial wear is remarkably reduced when used as excavating tools and the service life is prolonged.
