Heading D1W [Also in Division B5] A twisted plastic strip having slits extending in a direction perpendicular to the length of the strip is made by feeding a plastic strip between two rotating rollers pressed against each other, one of the rollers being smooth and the other being provided with longitudinal steel rods arranged on its peripheral surface, so that slits are press-cut in the strip, and then twisting the slit strip so as to give a thread-shaped core having projecting loops formed of the strip material between the slits. The plastic strip may be of polyvinyl chloride and may be 0. 05-1 mm. thick by 20-30 mm. wide. In oen embodiment (Fig. 1) a plastic strip 6, fed from bobbin 5, is slit during passage through the nip of rollers 2 and 3 and is then twisted in device 4, comprising an axial tube 23 and rotating hollow winding arm 24 driven by device 25. When the slit strip is twisted, the uncut areas 22 form a thread-like core 26 (Fig. 8) from which projects a helical line of loops formed of the portions 27 between the slits 20. The twisted strip may be used as warp and/or weft in carpet manufacture.</p> |
