A weight compensation device is described for the rulers of a drawing machine with a universal parallel ruler, which device avoids the disadvantages of previously known compensation devices with compensation weights or with cams. The weight compensation device has a spring (58) and a second rotating part (40), one end of the spring (58) being connected in a release plane to an eccentric region of the second rotating part (40), which for its part rotates by locking with the spindle (22), and the other end of the spring (58) being connected to the base plate (18), and a torque (T') engaging on the second rotating part (40) as a result of the spring (58) and virtually compensating for that on the second rotating part (40), and one end of the spring (58) moving in a release plane of the second rotating part (40) during a rotation of the second rotating part (40) in excess of 360 DEG , and the spring (58) thus not becoming hooked on the second rotating part (40). <IMAGE>
