The invention relates to a cooling unit for use in motor vehicles with internal combustion engines, the power requirement of which is obtained wholly or partially from the engine waste heat. According to the invention, the generator of an absorption cooling unit is heated by the engine waste heat. This can be performed by a heat exchanger installed in the coolant circuit between engine and radiator or/and by heat exchange from the engine exhaust gases. By means of at least one second heater additionally installed in the generator, which heater, however, is operated by electricity, gas or engine fuel, the cooling is ensured even when the engine is at a standstill.
