PURPOSE:To decrease the capacity of a high speed RAM or a shift register by applying time axis invertion to a data at each block of a certain length so as to eliminate the need for the inversion of a large capacity data for one track's share in high speed. CONSTITUTION:When a tape region of, e.g., a magnetic tape 1 is recorded in the running direction of the tape while the recording state is in reversing, the order of blocks in one track generated from an encoder 23 is reversed, the time axis is inverted by an inverting means 30 at each block, the result is fed to a rotary magnetic head 27 through a contact (b) of a switch 25 via a recording amplifier 26. Since the time axis of the data recorded onto a recording medium 1 or a data reproduced from the recording medium is inverted by the inverting meand 30 at each block of a certain length, quick reversing is attained and a high speed memory with a large capacity is not required.
