In order to improve the contrast ratio between the luminous intensity of a signal and the environment, a display system having one or more transducers is provided with a device which in the non-driven state of a transducer renders the latter completely invisible outwards, and in the case of the driven state completely visible. In particular, such a device can consist of a polariser (4) arranged on the light-exit side of a transducer, a liquid crystal twisted cell (5) which is arranged in front of the polariser and is completely transparent in the driven state and completely opaque in the non-driven state, and of an electronic control device. It is possible to provide behind the polariser (4) a reflecting film (3) which is translucent on one side in the signal direction and reflects extraneous light incident from outside and thus contributes to the luminous intensity of the signal. <IMAGE>
