Solder is applied to a workpiece surface by means of flame-spraying, the solder being melted by a fuel/oxygen flame and atomised by means of a propellent gas and being applied to the workpiece surface. To ensure that the composition of a solder layer applied by flame-spraying to a workpiece surface differs as little as possible from that of the corresponding solid solder, it is proposed to use an inert gas as the propellent gas and to set a fuel/oxygen ratio, at which the fuel fraction is greater than that required for a neutral flame setting.
