PURPOSE:To attain artificial gradation with the data quantity equal to that used for binary-coding operation by adding the original value of a submatrix obtained by dividing a matrix of the multi-value picture data and supplying the value proportional to the result of said addition to an artificial gradation means. CONSTITUTION:In an artificial gradation mode, multi-value picture data equivalent to a single screen outputted from an A/D converter 5 is stored once in a memory circuit 10 and then undergoes arithmetic processing through an arithmetic circuit 11. In other words, an original matrix of (MXN) of the multi-value picture data is divided into (nXn) pieces of submatrices. Then the original values of these submatrices are added together, and the value proportional to the result of said addition is defined as the value of the submatrix and sent to an artificial gradation circuit 12. The value of the submatrix is sent to a host computer via a multiplexer 7 and an interface.
