A disc brake for rope winches has two brake blocks (5, 11) which act on either side on a brake disc (2) of a rope drum (1) and of which one (5) can be automatically pressed against the brake disc (2) by the interaction of a pressure roller (7) and a wedge surface (6) when the direction of rotation of the rope drum (1) is reversed. In order to obtain an especially simple and inexpensive type of construction and create a sensitive, uniformly effective brake, a brake head (3) is provided which encloses the brake disc (2) and which forms on one side of the brake disc (2) the brake block (11) allocated to this side of the brake disc and on the other side of the brake disc (2) carries the pressure roller (7), between which and the brake disc the other brake block (5) forming the wedge surface (6) itself is inserted. <IMAGE>
