A swab (8) for medical, hygienic or cosmetic purposes comprises an outer gauze fabric layer (9) and at least one inner layer (10) made of an absorbent material, the two layers (9, 10) being folded inwards to form a bag having an inwardly turned edge (11, 12) bordered by a rubber ring (13), the inner layer (10) comprising a cut-to-size, soft non-woven of high absorbency and the two layers (9, 10) having the same length of cut, according to patent (patent application P 3332246.5). The swab (8) is to be simply producible so as to be uniformly soft and pliable allround in any size, able to be produced by machine and being free from loose fluff and fibre pieces. For this purpose, the inner layer (10) comprises a compressible absorbent cotton wool layer having a thickness of from 0.5 to 10 mm. <IMAGE>
