For temporary or ultimate storage, used fuel elements from a nuclear reactor are enclosed in canisters and kept in this form in a shielded, cooled storage room (12), in the entry station (13) of which they can be transported in a transport container (24) carried by a car (25). According to the invention, the fuel elements are enclosed in canisters at the nuclear reactor and transported with the latter to the entry station (13). Transporting is performed by a car (25), which permits a swivelling movement of the transport container (24) into a vertical position, in which the upper end face (27) lies on the upper side of the car (25). From there, the fuel elements are transferred with their canisters into a magazine (36), which can be reached by a loading machine (39) serving the storage room (12). <IMAGE>
