The rescue device for freeing people trapped and/or held by seat belts in a motor vehicle has a striking implement for breaking the window and a cutting device for cutting the belts. The cutting device is composed of a knife which is inserted in a slot, which tapers to the rear, of a casing having a stick-like handle. A casing part which is expanded to form a fist shape is connected to one end of the stick-like casing part, the slot which accommodates the knife being provided on one side of the fist-like expansion and a striking implement being mounted on its opposite side.
