The sensitive element (1) is heated by an alternating current from an alternating voltage supply (10). Since one of the physical properties of the surrounding medium (4) is known beforehand, the sensitive element (1) placed in contact with the surrounding medium reaches an equilibrium temperature related to the conductivity, the flow rate or any other properties of the surrounding medium (4), so that an electromotive force created by the Peltier effect appears at its terminals. A signal is tapped from the terminals of the sensitive element (1). This signal is then filtered by a processing circuit (11) and amplified by an amplifier (12). It is then applied, for example, to a voltmeter (13), which enables one of the physical properties of the said medium to be determined by measuring the emf created by the Peltier effect.

|
