Single cell protein(SCP) materials were produced by culturing a yeast under aerobic conditions in an aq. ferment contg. effective amts. of a carbon and energy substrate and assimilable nitrogen. Simultaneously a high salts concn. aq. was fed to the ferment. Thus, an inoculum of Pichia pastoris NRRL Y-11431 was fed a medium contg. 40.8% MeOH and 59.2% mineral salts soln(I) at a rate allowing a retention time of 8.35h. The pH was kept at 3.5 with concd. NH4OH dild with 1/3 vol. H2O. (I) contained 20 ml 85% H3PO4, 4g 85% KOH, 12g KCl, 10.4g MgSO4H2O, 2.4g CaCl22H2O/L, trace elements, biotin- thiamine HCl. Yeast was produced with a yield of 14.4g (as dry mass)/ 100g MeOH and cell d. was 133.3g/L effluent. SCP is useful for human or animal consumption. |
