PURPOSE:To reduce an after-image by shutting off an incident light during a shift gate being turned on and during a period immediately before being turned on and stopping the generation of an electric charge in a photoelectric converting section. CONSTITUTION:An electric charge is generated in a photoelectric converting section at a time td-1 and moved to a storing section to be stored. During a time tf-1 when an incident light is shut off and a shift pulse is turned ON, a generation of the electric charge in the photoelectric converting section is stopped and a movement of the electric charge from the photoelectric converting section to the storing section continues. By shutting off the incident light for a constant time, an after-image is reduced. A light is injected to an image pick up element for a constant time tg and a time th when after this incident light is shut off, the shift pulse is turned OFF is changed, a condition of an output of a image pick up element is changed. When the time th is small, immediately after a shift gate is turned OFF, the electric charge is remained ion the photoelectric converting section and the storing section, the after-image is produced. When the time th is large, the after-image is not produced. Thereby the after-image can be reduced and extinguished.
