PURPOSE:To obtain a picture processing device provided with the identifying function of a picture tone in which a hardware scale is small and the high speed processing can be executed by identifying a picture tone of attention picture element data from the characteristic of a space frequency, which the attention picture element has, and from the linearity of the attention picture element by the identifying means, in the digital copying machine, facsimile, etc. CONSTITUTION:An identifying circuit 13 counts a characteristic quantity from an arrangement near the attention picture element, and the characteristic quantity is processed by the threshold and the picture tone is identified. In accordance with the identifying result RE of the picture tone, a switch 15 is changed over, either of a binary signal HS or a binary signal DS is selected and outputted to a recording device 14 of a laser beam printer, etc. A circuit is constructed to count the characteristic quantity over an adjoining 6X6 picture element including the attention picture element. A ROM9 inputs the characteristic quantity and outputs a comparing result (identifying signal RE of one bit) concerning whether or not the characteristic quantity is larger than the value K.
