PURPOSE:To make it possible to find a retrieval item when a video-head etc. stops by retrieving the retrieval contents at a TV picture on which characters etc. generated from a character pattern are displayed. CONSTITUTION:A starting key operation on a keyboard 3 transfers a video tape TV to a recording position of an index data ID and makes a VTR1 in a reproducing mode. After an index data and a character data are extracted from a video signal which is read out from a video tape by a sampling circuit 10, the extracted index data and character data are transferred to a control device 2 through a shift resister 11 and are written to a memory in the control device 2. Next, a character code stored at a memory is transferred to a CRT controller 12. A user searches a required item from the content list of a video tape displayed at a CRT picture and retrieves an item by inputting a number on the keyboard 3.
