PURPOSE:To decrease a psychological burden when an operator prepares a document by being provided with a means to recognize, after the dictionary is retrieved, that the given character column is an unregistered word, and a means to convert the retrieved character column recognized by a recognizing means to KATAKANA (Japanese syllabary) and store it in an optimum word memory means. CONSTITUTION:When a user inputs the punctuation of a word from a character input 1, these punctuations are set at a retrieved character column setting part 3, and a dictionary retrieving part 4 converts to the suitable word for the character column in the retrieved character column setting part 3 while a word dictionary 5 is referred to. As the result of the retrieval, when the word is present in the dictionary, being converted to the word and stored temporarily at a candidate memory part 6, and thereafter, the word is estimated by an optimum word estimating part 7, and stored in a converting result memory part 10. When the word is absent in the dictionary, the word is converted to KATAKANA by a KATAKANA converting part 9, and thereafter, stored into a converting result memory part 10. Thus, even when the word is not designated on purpose by the key shift, the character column absent in the dictionary is automatically converted to KATAKANA.
