PURPOSE:To obtain a composition for a magnetic recording medium ensuring high uniform dispersibility, having superior electromagnetic characteristics and giving a high strength film by coating by using a specified aminosilane compound as a coupling agent and dispersing ferromagnetic powder in a binder consisting essentially of specified three kinds of resins. CONSTITUTION:One ore more kinds of coupling agents selected among aminosilane compounds represented by formulae I, II (where each of R and R' is alkyl, preferably 1-5C alkyl, m=0 or 1, n=1-5, and n'=1-5), a binder consisting essentially of epoxy resin, phenol resin and polyvinyl butyral resin, and ferromagnetic powder are dispersed in a mixed solvent and kneaded to prepare a magnetic coating material. Powder of a reinforcing agent such as alumina may be further added. The amount of the coupling agents used is 0.1-2wt% of the amount of the binder. The magnetic coating material contains well-dispersed magnetic powder and gives a film having superior smoothness and bonding strength by coating. The coating material is suitable for use in the production of a magnetic recording medium having superior S/N characteristics such as a magnetic disk. |
